What if the renter does not have a SSN or ITIN?

If the renter does not yet have a Tax ID (SSN or ITIN), they can still fund their deposit with Whale. However, we will not be able to fully open their Whale account until they provide an SSN or ITIN.

Here's how to fund a deposit without a Tax ID:

  1. When reaching the Tax ID step in Whale's create account flow, the renter should select the option “I don’t have an SSN or ITIN”.
  2. Renter will be provided with instructions on how to fund their deposit by sending funds to Whale (instead of directly to their individual Whale account).
  3. Once Whale receives the funds, we'll confirm the deposit has been received and provide instructions on how they can get an SSN or ITIN.
  4. When the renter receives their Tax ID, they must return to Whale to finish opening their account.

Note: Some payment methods might not be available to renters without a Tax ID.
